A 36-year-old Owatonna man is in custody after allegedly opening fire on police officers during a traffic stop Wednesday evening, triggering an hours-long standoff that ended when the suspect shot himself before being safely taken into custody.
The incident prompted a shelter-in-place order for residents near West McKinley Street as multiple law enforcement agencies responded to contain the armed suspect. Authorities confirmed that no officers were injured during the exchange.

Shooting During Traffic Stop
According to the Owatonna Police Department, the incident began at approximately 8:20 p.m. after officers responded to a report involving a person experiencing a mental health crisis who had left the area in a vehicle.
Officers later located the vehicle on West Bridge Street and initiated a traffic stop near the intersection of South Oak Avenue and Southview Street.
Police said officers observed cuts on the driver’s forearm during the encounter. As they attempted to investigate, the man allegedly became uncooperative, reached for a firearm, and began firing at officers.
The suspect then fled the scene in his vehicle.
Hours-Long Standoff on West McKinley Street
Authorities tracked the suspect to the 200 block of West McKinley Street, between Oak Avenue and Linn Avenue, where he stopped his vehicle.
Officers immediately secured the area while additional resources responded. Assistance was provided by the Steele County Sheriff’s Office, Rice County Sheriff’s Office, Minnesota State Patrol, the South Central Drug Investigation Unit (SCDIU) SWAT Team, and the Rice County SWAT Team.
At approximately 10:15 p.m., officials issued a shelter-in-place order for nearby residents as negotiators and tactical teams worked to safely resolve the situation.
Suspect Shoots Himself Before Arrest
Police said that at approximately 12:20 a.m., the suspect sustained a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Officers were then able to safely take him into custody without any additional use of force or further exchange of gunfire.
He was transported to a hospital for treatment, where authorities say he is recovering from non-life-threatening injuries.
No Officers Injured
Despite the suspect allegedly firing multiple rounds during the initial traffic stop, no law enforcement officers were injured.
Owatonna Police Chief Jeff Mundale said criminal charges are expected to be filed once the suspect’s medical condition allows. Formal charges are anticipated sometime next week.
Investigation Remains Active
The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension and local investigators continue processing the scene and reviewing the events leading up to the shooting.
Detectives are expected to examine body camera footage, physical evidence, witness statements, and other investigative materials as they determine the full sequence of events.
Authorities have asked motorists to continue following any remaining traffic restrictions in the area while investigators complete their work.
Additional information, including the suspect’s identity and formal criminal charges, is expected to be released as the investigation progresses.
