SPRINGFIELD, MISSOURI, USA — Two Springfield residents died following an apparent murder-suicide inside a parking garage at Mercy Hospital early Thursday morning, according to the Springfield Police Department.
Authorities identified the deceased as 59-year-old Jacqueline Ecton and 60-year-old Russell Ecton, both of Springfield. Police said officers responded at approximately 4:50 a.m. on July 2, 2026, to reports of a shooting at the hospital’s parking garage located at 1235 E. Cherokee Street.
Upon arrival, responding officers located Russell Ecton deceased at the scene. Jacqueline Ecton was found with a gunshot wound and was transported to the hospital for emergency medical treatment. Despite lifesaving efforts, she later died from her injuries.
The Springfield Police Department’s Homicide Unit initiated an investigation and, based on preliminary findings, believes Russell Ecton fatally shot Jacqueline Ecton before dying from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. Authorities confirmed that next of kin have been notified.
Investigators continue to process evidence, review the circumstances leading up to the shooting, and interview individuals who may have relevant information. Officials have not publicly disclosed a possible motive, and the investigation remains active.
