Jayden Hawes Arrested After Coligny Beach Shooting That Injured Seven on July 4 in Hilton Head

The peaceful Fourth of July celebrations at Coligny Beach on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, were shattered Saturday evening when gunfire erupted in a crowded public beach access area, leaving seven people injured and prompting a large-scale law enforcement response.

Authorities have since arrested four individuals in connection with the shooting, including 18-year-old Jayden Hawes of St. Helena Island, who now faces multiple felony charges. The incident remains under active investigation by the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office.

Gunfire Breaks Out During Holiday Celebrations

According to investigators, the shooting occurred at approximately 8:20 p.m. on July 4, 2026, while thousands of residents and visitors were gathered at Coligny Beach to celebrate Independence Day.

The Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office Communications Center received numerous emergency calls reporting gunfire near the popular public beach access area. Deputies who were already assigned to holiday patrols responded within moments, joined by additional officers, emergency medical personnel, and investigators.

Upon arriving at the scene, first responders located seven victims suffering from gunshot wounds. Authorities said all seven were transported to nearby hospitals for treatment. Officials reported that the injuries were believed to be non-life-threatening, though no additional medical updates have been released.

Investigation Indicates Fight Escalated Into Gunfire

Preliminary findings indicate the violence began as a confrontation between two groups gathered near the beach entrance.

Investigators believe the argument quickly escalated before multiple shots were fired into the crowded area. The suspects fled immediately after the shooting, triggering a coordinated search involving deputies already stationed throughout Hilton Head Island for the holiday festivities.

Four Arrested Following Investigation

Authorities announced the arrest of four individuals believed to have been involved in the shooting.

    • Possession of a weapon during a violent crime

    • Aggravated breach of peace

  • Marcello Royal, 17, charged with:

    • Attempted murder

    • Possession of a weapon during a violent crime

    • Unlawful possession of a weapon

    • Aggravated breach of peace

  • Quazeir Davis, 17, charged with:

    • Attempted murder

    • Possession of a weapon during a violent crime

    • Unlawful possession of a weapon

    • Aggravated breach of peace

  • Christopher Capers, 17, charged with:

    • Accessory after the fact

Officials confirmed that all four suspects are being held at the Beaufort County Detention Center pending further court proceedings.

As with all criminal cases, the charges are allegations, and each defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.

Community Left Shaken

Coligny Beach is among South Carolina’s busiest public beaches and traditionally attracts thousands of visitors during Independence Day celebrations.

The outbreak of gunfire in such a crowded location has raised renewed concerns about public safety during major holiday events.

Witnesses described scenes of confusion as beachgoers ran for cover while deputies secured the area and emergency crews treated the wounded. Portions of the beach access area were temporarily closed while detectives collected evidence and interviewed witnesses.

Hilton Head Island Mayor Alan Perry addressed residents following the incident, emphasizing that public safety remains a priority while acknowledging the seriousness of the violence.

Local officials also praised the rapid response of deputies, emergency medical personnel, and other first responders who quickly secured the scene and rendered aid to the injured victims.
