Breaking Sayreville Shooting Update Today:Juvenile Charged After East Brunswick Teen Killed in Parlin

Authorities in Sayreville, New Jersey, continue investigating a fatal shooting that claimed the life of a 17-year-old East Brunswick teenager late Friday night, a tragedy that has shaken residents throughout Middlesex County. Officials have confirmed that a 16-year-old Sayreville resident has been taken into custody and charged with offenses that would constitute murder if committed by an adult.

The incident occurred shortly before 11 p.m. on January 9, when officers with the Sayreville Police Department responded to reports of gunfire on Woods Edge Court in the Parlin section of the borough. Upon arrival, officers located a 17-year-old male from East Brunswick suffering from a gunshot wound. Despite emergency response efforts, the teenager was pronounced dead at the scene.

Juvenile Charged in Connection With Fatal Shooting

Following an investigation conducted by detectives from the Sayreville Police Department and the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office, authorities arrested a 16-year-old male from Sayreville in connection with the homicide.

According to prosecutors, the juvenile has been charged with acts of delinquency that, if committed by an adult, would constitute:

  • Murder

  • Possession of a handgun for an unlawful purpose

  • Unlawful possession of a handgun

  • Armed riot

The juvenile suspect is currently being held at the Middlesex County Juvenile Detention Center while awaiting a preliminary hearing before a Family Court judge. As with all criminal cases, the charges are allegations, and the juvenile is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.

Authorities Say the Incident Was Not Random

Investigators have confirmed that the victim and the accused juvenile knew one another prior to the shooting. Based on evidence gathered thus far, officials do not believe the homicide was a random act of violence.

While authorities have not publicly disclosed a motive, detectives continue reviewing evidence, interviewing witnesses, and examining the circumstances that led to the fatal confrontation. The investigation remains active as officials work to establish a complete timeline of events.

Investigation Continues

The investigation is being led by Detective Mark Nairooz of the Sayreville Police Department and Detective Ryan Kirsh of the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office.

Investigators continue collecting forensic evidence, reviewing available surveillance footage, and speaking with individuals who may have information about the shooting.

Authorities are encouraging anyone who witnessed the incident or possesses relevant information to contact the Sayreville Police Department at 732-727-4444 or the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office at 732-745-3711.

Community Mourns Young Life Lost

The death of the East Brunswick teenager has deeply affected both his hometown and the Sayreville community. Although officials have not publicly released the victim’s identity because of his age, residents have expressed sadness over another incident of youth violence affecting Middlesex County.

Local leaders and community members have extended condolences to the victim’s family while emphasizing the importance of supporting young people and addressing violence among teenagers.

The tragedy also occurred during a weekend in which Middlesex County experienced multiple deadly shootings involving juveniles, heightening concern among residents and public officials.

Ongoing Case

Because the accused is a juvenile, future court proceedings will take place within New Jersey’s Family Court system unless prosecutors seek different legal action under applicable state law.

Authorities have indicated they will release additional information if appropriate as the investigation progresses. Until then, investigators continue asking the public to avoid speculation and rely on official updates from law enforcement.

The Sayreville Police Department and the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office remain committed to determining the full circumstances surrounding the fatal shooting while providing justice for the victim and his family.
