Officer Killed While Responding to Domestic Disturbance
According to the Beech Grove Police Department, officers were dispatched shortly after 6 p.m. on February 16, 2026, to the 100 block of Diplomat Court after reports of a disturbance. Moments after arriving, officers came under gunfire while attempting to investigate the call.
Officer Brian Elliott and another officer were both struck by gunfire and rushed to Eskenazi Hospital in Indianapolis. Despite lifesaving efforts by medical personnel, Elliott died from his injuries. The second officer survived and was reported to be in stable condition.
Massive Manhunt Ends With Suspect’s Arrest
Following the shooting, the gunman fled the scene, prompting authorities to issue a statewide Blue Alert while multiple agencies joined the search.
Indiana State Police, SWAT officers, local departments, and federal partners participated in the operation before locating and arresting Kenneth Terrell Johnson, 47, who was found hiding in a shared laundry area within the apartment complex. Authorities reported that he was taken into custody without further violence.
Johnson has since been charged with murder, attempted murder, and several additional felony offenses related to the attack on the officers. Prosecutors continue preparing the case as it moves through Indiana’s court system.
Remembering Officer Brian Elliott
Officer Brian Elliott was 33 years old and fulfilled what many described as his lifelong dream of serving the community where he grew up.
A graduate of Beech Grove High School, Elliott earned a criminal justice degree before spending several years with the Marion County Sheriff’s Office. He later joined the Beech Grove Police Department in September 2024, where colleagues quickly recognized his professionalism, dedication, and commitment to public service.
Police Chief Michael Maurice described Elliott as an exceptional officer whose loss would be felt throughout the department and community.
Friends and fellow officers have remembered him as someone who consistently placed others before himself, earning admiration both inside and outside law enforcement.
Community Comes Together
Following the tragedy, hundreds of law enforcement officers from across Indiana and neighboring states joined Beech Grove residents in honoring Elliott’s service.
A public visitation and funeral were held at Beech Grove High School before a procession escorted the fallen officer to Crown Hill Cemetery. During the ceremony, officers gave Elliott his final “10-42,” the radio code symbolizing the end of an officer’s final watch.
Community members also established memorials outside the police department, leaving flowers, flags, handwritten notes, and other tributes in his memory.

Although the suspect has been arrested, investigators continue reviewing evidence collected from the scene, including witness statements, forensic evidence, and communications related to the original domestic disturbance call.
