The South Sioux City, Nebraska community is mourning the heartbreaking loss of Mindy Sims, who passed away unexpectedly in a car accident on June 29, 2026, at the age of 46. A devoted mother, dedicated dental hygienist, accomplished athlete, and faithful Christian, Mindy’s passing has left an immeasurable void in the hearts of her family, friends, coworkers, former teammates, and all who were touched by her remarkable life.
Born on March 1, 1980, in Sioux City, Iowa, Mindy was the twin daughter of Donna (Peters) Durant. She was raised in South Sioux City, where she was baptized and confirmed at Hope Lutheran Church, forming a foundation of faith that guided her throughout her life.
From an early age, Mindy demonstrated exceptional athletic talent. While attending South Sioux City High School, she excelled in basketball, volleyball, softball, track, soccer, and cheerleading. She played a key role in leading the Cardinals girls basketball program to four consecutive state championships, earning a lasting place in school history. Her leadership, energy, and kindness also led to her being named Homecoming Queen, reflecting the respect and admiration she received from classmates and faculty. She graduated with the Class of 1998 before continuing her basketball career on scholarship at Morningside College.
Mindy later pursued a career in healthcare, earning her degree in dental hygiene from the University of South Dakota. For 20 years, she worked at the Winnebago Dental Clinic, where she became known for her professionalism, compassion, and ability to put patients at ease. Her coworkers remember her as a dedicated professional who brought positivity, warmth, and genuine care to every interaction.
Even while building her career, Mindy remained closely connected to the sport she loved, serving as an assistant coach for the South Sioux City Cardinals girls basketball team. Coaching allowed her to mentor young athletes, including her daughter McKenna, continuing to inspire others with the same passion and determination that defined her own playing days.
Above all, Mindy was deeply devoted to her children—McKenna, Brodee, Jagger, and Cooper—who were the center of her life. She poured her heart into motherhood, supporting their dreams, attending every milestone, and ensuring they always felt loved and encouraged. Her family remembers her as a constant source of strength, joy, and unconditional support.
Mindy is also remembered for her selflessness and compassion. She often carried food and blankets in her vehicle to help those in need, quietly performing acts of kindness without recognition. Her strong Christian faith shaped her worldview, and she often credited God as her source of strength. Whether hosting family gatherings, encouraging friends, or uplifting those going through difficult times, she radiated warmth and generosity.
She is survived by her children, McKenna Schnurr (TJ), Brodee Sims, Jagger Sims, and Cooper Sims; her mother, Donna Durant; her siblings Tami Saul (David), Mark Durant (Alejandra), Derek Durant, and Brandon Durant (Carrie); her special friend Roy Mason; numerous nieces and nephews; and her beloved dogs, Max and Kylo. She was preceded in death by her father, Raymond Durant, her grandparents, and her uncle Ronald Peters.
Family and friends will gather for a Celebration of Life visitation on Tuesday, July 7, from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Mohr & Becker-Hunt Funeral Home in South Sioux City. A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, July 8, at 10:30 a.m. at Restoration Church in Sioux City, Iowa.
Though her life was cut tragically short, Mindy Sims will be remembered for her faith, compassion, strength, and unwavering love for her family. Her legacy will continue through her children, her students, her patients, and all who were fortunate enough to know her.
