Family, friends, former students, colleagues, and members of the Orting and Federal Way communities are mourning the loss of Kirsten McCarl, a dedicated choir director and music educator whose lifelong passion for teaching and music profoundly shaped the lives of hundreds of students.
Kirsten devoted her career to music education, using her classroom as a place to foster creativity, confidence, and connection. As choir director at Orting Middle School and Orting High School, she was admired not only for her musical expertise but also for the deep care and encouragement she extended to every student she taught. Under her guidance, students found more than a place to sing—they discovered a supportive environment where they could grow, express themselves, and form lasting bonds.
Prior to her work in the Orting School District, Kirsten spent more than two decades at St. Vincent de Paul School in Federal Way, where she taught music from 1999 to 2021. During that time, she inspired generations of young musicians, helping students develop both their artistic talents and their confidence. Many of her former students credit her with instilling in them a lifelong love of music and learning.
A graduate of Pacific Lutheran University, where she earned a Bachelor of Education in Music, Kirsten carried her passion for teaching into every chapter of her professional life. She believed strongly in the transformative power of music to unite people, build community, and uplift the human spirit. Whether preparing students for concerts, rehearsals, competitions, or performances, she approached her work with patience, enthusiasm, and unwavering dedication.
Beyond her professional accomplishments, Kirsten is being remembered for her kindness, warmth, and generous spirit. Colleagues describe her as a supportive and collaborative educator who freely shared her knowledge and celebrated the success of others. Students recall her approachable nature, encouraging presence, and ability to see potential in every child, even when they struggled to see it in themselves.
News of her passing has prompted an outpouring of tributes from former students, parents, fellow educators, and community members. Many have shared heartfelt stories of how her encouragement changed their lives, helped them overcome challenges, and inspired a lasting appreciation for music. Her influence extended far beyond the classroom, leaving a legacy felt across generations.
Family and friends are scheduled to gather to celebrate Kirsten McCarl’s life on Monday, July 13, at St. Vincent de Paul Church in Federal Way. The service will begin with doors opening at 10:00 a.m., followed by Mass at 11:00 a.m., and a reception afterward in the parish hall where loved ones will share memories and honor her life.
Though her passing leaves a profound void, Kirsten McCarl’s legacy lives on through the music she shared, the students she inspired, and the countless lives she touched with her compassion, patience, and dedication to education. She will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
